Portfolio Review

SOVA’s B.F.A. programs are dependent upon the recruitment of quality
students for concentrated study in limited numbers. Each semester the
school carefully balances our student needs with resource and facility
capacities in an effort to achieve the highest academic quality. Our
faculty are passionate about their work as artists, creative
professionals and designers, and seek to instruct those with equal
passion and potential. By working through the three courses in the
fall semester of the Foundations of Art and Design Program, students
are exposed to the expectations that are reflected in the B.F.A.
programs.

Students must pass the annual Portfolio Review in order to enter the
B.F.A. programs of Studio Art or Visual Communications Design. Work
ethic, determination and comprehension of the lessons taught in the
Foundations Program are key elements to a competitive body of work for
faculty review. Specific requirements for Studio Art and Visual
Communications Design will be discussed at the mandatory portfolio
review meeting.

Eligibility: Studio Art and Visual Communications Design candidates
must be currently enrolled or have passed all three foundation courses
(1204, 1404 and 1604). Acceptance is contingent on successfully
passing all three of these courses. Students must have and maintain a
QCA of 2.0 or greater to enter and remain in Studio Art or VCD
programs. All artwork must be original and produced by the applicant.
The committees encourage submitting work produced during your
foundational courses.

Review Committees: The Studio Art and Visual Communications Design
Review Committees (comprised of SOVA Faculty) screens properly
submitted portfolios for outstanding qualities in artistic ability,
creativity, presentation skills and overall motivation. Reviews will
be conducted by the committees over a three day period while the
Armory is closed to the public. The formal review process takes place
once a year at the end of the fall semester. Students may re-submit a
portfolio for review annually as often as desired.
