Creative Technologies MFA Overview

The Master in Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Technologies at Virginia Tech is a two-year, terminal degree program that prepares students to use computer applications to manipulate images and information. Through various media such as film, video, photography, computer animation, and digital soundtracks, students will learn to communicate messages that simulate real-world content. The program will address commercial, industrial, and entertainment needs through instruction in emerging trends and issues applicable in two emphasis areas: Interactive New Media & Design and Digital Fabrication & Imaging.

The Creative Technologies program incorporates an interdisciplinary focus into the curriculum through the School of Visual Arts and the Collaborative for Creative Technologies in the Arts and Design program. By collaborating with faculty from music, communications, and computer science, our program offers expertise in graphics, digital music, 3-D animation, web-design, new media theory, and installation art. The sum result is a connection between the diverse, technology-based faculty artist / designers and the larger community of creative individuals across campus.

The MFA will also be a collaboration with FourDesign, a School of Visual Arts internship program in the Visual Communication Design Program, which will allow graduate students the opportunity to work as student managers, project coordinators, and production managers for the design studio. This will strengthen the institutional capacity of the Visual Design Studio to broaden its current scope of services and increase its outreach within the university, community, and Commonwealth. Most importantly, it will provide the opportunity for candidates to gain valuable experience as managers of creative staff and industry processes within a working studio setting.
